About Ferndale
Ferndale is a compact city of roughly four square miles pressed up against Detroit's northern edge. Its downtown sits at the crossing of Nine Mile Road and Woodward Avenue, and nearly everything worth visiting is within a few blocks of that intersection.
The city has long been a center of metro Detroit's LGBTQ+ community and of its independent, do-it-yourself creative scene. That shows up in the mix along Nine Mile: record stores, tattoo shops, vintage clothing, breweries, dive bars and a restaurant row that turns over often enough to stay interesting.
Residential Ferndale is a tight grid of small, older homes, which keeps the city dense and genuinely walkable — unusual for a metro Detroit suburb.
