About Detroit

Detroit is Michigan's largest city and the historic center of the American auto industry. Its skyline is shaped by early-twentieth-century architecture, and its riverfront looks directly across the water at Windsor, Ontario — one of the few places in the United States where you look south into Canada.

The city spans roughly 139 square miles, so Detroit is best understood neighborhood by neighborhood: Downtown and Greektown for sports, theaters and hotels; Midtown for the Detroit Institute of Arts and the university district; Corktown for its restaurant scene; Eastern Market for the weekend produce sheds and murals; Mexicantown for its bakeries and taquerias.

Music, sports and food carry the culture. Motown started here, techno was invented here, and four major professional teams play within the city. Belle Isle, the island state park reached by the MacArthur Bridge, and the riverwalk give the city a genuinely public waterfront.
